Snooker icon John Virgo was fondly remembered today at a special service held at Sheffield Cathedral following his passing in February.

Organised by friend and former world champion Ken Doherty, and snooker broadcaster Rob Walker, the service was attended by Virgo’s immediate family and friends, as well as several key personalities from the sport throughout the years.

As well as Doherty, former world champions present included Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott, Shaun Murphy, Neil Robertson, Cliff Thorburn, Peter Ebdon and Stuart Bingham, while Jimmy White, Mark Allen, Gary Wilson and Tony Knowles were among several other current or former professionals in attendance.

The WPBSA was represented by its Chairman Jason Ferguson who said: “It was a great honour to be present today for a wonderful celebration of John’s incredible life.

“It was great to see so many people in attendance, from those who knew him best to the many fans, with whom he always had such a strong connection through his commentary and exhibition work across the decades.

“I would like to thank both Ken Doherty and Rob Walker for organising the day, as well as everyone who came to pay their respects to a real snooker man. It will not be the same this year at the Crucible without him, but I have no doubt that everyone who attends this year’s Championship will remember him fondly throughout the 17 days.”
