News Ng On Yee Turns Round 3–2 Down to Beat Mink in Sydney — O'Donnell Ends Trump's Belfast Run; Django Out in Manila

feature-clean.jpg

Tuesday morning, and the overnight news is from Sydney, where Ng On Yee won the Australian Women's Open two years after losing the 2024 final there on the last black. Back in Belfast, Judd Trump is the latest big name gone from the Northern Ireland Open. In Quezon City the Philippines Open is already a few hours old, and one Filipino legend is already out.

Sydney — Ng wins it the hard way

Ng On Yee beat Mink Nutcharut 4–3 in the final at Mounties (scores per snooker.org). It's her third Australian Women's Open, and World Women's Snooker says it's her 25th ranking title. She also won the Belgian and British Opens this year.

  • The start: Ng won the first two frames with 58 and 54.
  • The swing: Mink then took three in a row, 64–50, 59–25 and 66–57, to lead 3–2. Ng made a 50 in the first of those and still lost it.
  • The finish: Ng won the last two with an 81 and a 57, conceding one point in the sixth.

In 2024 the same two players met in the final in Sydney and Mink won 4–3 on the final black. Mink came in looking for her first WWS title since January 2025, so losing this one will sting.

Ng also came from behind to beat Reanne Evans 4–3 in the semi-final. Evans led 3–1 after a 114, the first century of the event and her record-extending 24th on the WWS Tour. Ng won the last three frames and made a 103 in the decider. Mink beat Anupama Ramachandran 4–1 in the other semi.

Belfast — O'Donnell finally beats Trump

Martin O'Donnell beat Judd Trump 4–3 on Monday night. He had lost all eight of their previous professional meetings (per Totally Snookered). O'Donnell, the world number 56, went ahead three times with 64, 50 and 52. Each time Trump levelled with 91, 52 and 94. O'Donnell then won the decider. TNT Sports says he has been struggling with a neck injury recently, and it counts Trump as the ninth seed out in round one.

Trump has won this event four times and played in six of the last eight finals, and before last night he had won 43 of his last 47 matches here. O'Donnell plays Luca Brecel on Wednesday, per RTÉ.

The rest of Monday night (per snooker.org and BBC Sport):

  • Stuart Bingham 4–2 Yao Pengcheng: Bingham's 1,000th professional match win. WST says only five players got there before him: Higgins, Williams, Selby, O'Sullivan and Trump. Cheung Ka Wai is next.
  • John Higgins 4–1 Liam Highfield: Higgins goes through, and Kyren Wilson is no longer the only top-16 survivor
  • Jak Jones 4–1 Tom Ford: with a 103. Jones has won the Championship League and the British Open, the only player with two titles this season
  • Zhang Anda 4–2 Liam Pullen

Today's card (UK times, per BBC Sport):

  • 10am: Mark Williams v Robbie Williams, Chang Bingyu v Ryan Day
  • 1pm: Mark Allen v Jordan Brown in an all-Northern Ireland tie, and Zhou Yuelong v Michael Holt
  • 3pm: Zhao Xintong v Gao Yang, Noppon Saengkham v Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon
  • 7pm, last 32: Kyren Wilson v Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, Louis Heathcote v Matthew Selt, Wang Xinbo v Mateusz Baranowski
  • 9pm, last 32: Jack Lisowski v Anthony McGill, Joe O'Connor v Ricky Walden

Quezon City — Geronimo beats Django

The Roobet Philippines Open broke off at Gateway Mall at 5am UK time. Rodrigo Geronimo has already knocked out Francisco "Django" Bustamante. Last year Bustamante beat Fedor Gorst in a deciding rack here. This morning the World Nineball Tour called it a "horror-showing" from the 2010 world champion. It's single elimination all the way, with matches race to 10 up to and including the quarter-finals. First prize is $20,000 from a $100,000 fund (per Absolute Pool).

The early winners, per the World Nineball Tour:

  • Albert Januarta beat Yuki Komiya to become the first player into the last 64. He made two golden breaks in the match, after two more at the Reyes Cup.
  • David Alcaide, the defending champion, won his opener comfortably. The draw had him against Rodlin John Bautista.
  • Justin Bergman is through and still in the hunt for a Mosconi Cup place. This is the last event before the rankings cut-off.
  • Duong Quoc Hoang won by a whitewash after a rough Reyes Cup.
  • Jefrey Roda got through a tricky opener against Lauro Bongay.

We couldn't find frame scores for these yet, because WNT's live scoring needs a login. The draw had set up a last-64 match between world number one Aloysius Yapp and Bustamante, so that one is off. Joshua Filler isn't playing.

Goyang — the PBA men start

The PBA men's last 128 at KINTEX started at 5am UK time (per Infoarounds, from the official draw). Daniel Sánchez and Kang Dong-gung both play at 3pm UK. Crown Haitai champion Nguyen Quoc Nguyen, David Martínez and Cho Jae-ho start on Wednesday. The LPBA last 32 is also on today, and the women's final is on Sunday.
