The held-over afternoon at Bao’an finished as a star cull. China’s Jiang Jun, world No. 64, beat seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 5–2 in the last 64 — sealing it with a 108 break after O’Sullivan had levelled from 0–2 with runs of 92 and 52. Jiang next faces England’s Zak Surety.
World No. 1 Zhao Xintong is also out. Scotland’s Scott Donaldson, 65 places below him in the rankings, came from 2–3 down and won a final-frame decider 5–4 (breaks of 77, 105, 50 and 62). Donaldson meets China’s Pang Junxu in the last 32.
That pairs with this morning’s defending-champ exit — Fan Zhengyi’s 5–4 over Mark Williams — so three of the biggest names on the draw sheet are already gone on day one.
