News Gorst Whitewashes Pavlukhin as the Reyes Cup Winners Roll In Manila — Lisowski's Belfast Defence Over; Wang Misses the Last Red on a 147

feature-clean.jpg

Wednesday morning. Overnight the Reyes Cup winners finally got going at the Philippines Open, and three of them dropped four racks between them. In Belfast the defending champion is out, a teenager came within one red of a maximum, and the last match didn't finish until nearly 2am. Plus the overnight results from Goyang that we couldn't find last night.

Quezon City — the Reyes Cup winners turn up

On Tuesday the Philippines Open lost Moritz Neuhausen, Francisco Bustamante and AJ Manas on day one. Day two at Gateway Mall started at 5am UK time, and the Rest of the World players who won the Reyes Cup on Sunday looked very comfortable. Scores per the World Nineball Tour:

  • Fedor Gorst 10–0 Vitaly Pavlukhin: he didn't drop a rack. On day one Rodrigo Geronimo beat Bustamante 10–0, and Duong Quoc Hoang took 52 minutes to beat Aleksandar Atanasov by the same score.
  • Shane Van Boening 10–2 Chris Stripple: the five-time US Open champion is into the last 64. WNT called it "no messing about".
  • Francisco Sánchez Ruiz 10–2 Genesis Ouano: the US Open champion got his week started on Table 1.
  • Bernie Regalario 10–4 Albert Espinola: the all-Filipino match went the way of the WNT world number 18.

That's 30 racks to four for Gorst, Van Boening and Sánchez Ruiz. This is also the last event that counts for the Mosconi Cup and World Pool Masters rankings.

Aleksa Pecelj, captain Ralf Souquet, Jayson Shaw and Dennis Orcollo are also due to play today, and we hadn't seen their results at the time of writing. It's race to 10 through the quarter-finals, with the semis and final on Saturday.

Belfast — the champion goes, and a 147 nearly comes

We left you last night with the 7pm and 9pm last-32 matches still being played. Here's how they finished (scores per BBC Sport, WST and the live scoring):

  • Anthony McGill 4–1 Jack Lisowski: the top seed and defending champion is out. TNT Sports' live blog said Lisowski made a lot of unforced errors. McGill potted with 92% success and finished it off with a 73. WST called it "a composed finish". McGill had beaten Stephen Maguire 4–1 in round one.
  • Mateusz Baranowski 4–3 Wang Xinbo: the teenage rookie Wang was on a 147 in the sixth frame, the one that levelled the match at 3–3, but he missed the final red (per TNT Sports and the live scoring). Baranowski won the decider. Totally Snookered calls it the biggest win of the Pole's career, and it puts him in the last 16 of a ranking event for the first time.
  • Kyren Wilson 4–2 Thepchaiya Un-Nooh: breaks of 92, 139, 84 and 103 for the 2024 champion (per WST). He plays Pang Junxu or Liam Davies next.
  • Matthew Selt 4–2 Louis Heathcote: Heathcote had knocked out Mark Selby on Sunday.
  • Ricky Walden 4–3 Joe O'Connor: the live scoring has it finishing at 1.58am. Walden beat Neil Robertson in round one.

Totally Snookered says Kyren Wilson, John Higgins and Mark Williams are the only top-16 players who won in round one. On Thursday it's McGill v Baranowski in the last 16, and Walden plays Elliot Slessor or Jamie Jones.

Goyang — Sánchez, Kang and Kim Ga-young all through

The late session at the PBA Stadium finished after we went to press last night. Results per Yonhap/SBS and YOLD:

  • Kang Dong-gung 3–1 Moon Ho-beom (15–2, 5–15, 15–4, 15–11)
  • Kim Young-won 3–0 Cha Kwang-su: he won the last two sets 15–14.
  • Mori Yusuke, last season's champion at this event, beat Lee Hae-dong 3–0. Lütfi Çenet, Eddy Leppens and David Zapata are through too.

In the LPBA last 32, Kim Ga-young beat Hwang Min-ji 3–1, winning the last two sets 11–1 and 11–5. The tour-four winner Jeong Su-bin beat Park Ga-eun 3–0. Kang Ji-eun, Kim Da-hee and Han Ji-eun all won on shoot-outs, Kim Da-hee against Lee Woo-kyung and Han Ji-eun against Hida Orie.
