News Fan Zhengyi Sinks Judd Trump in a Scrappy Nanjing Decider — Ina Kaplan Ends Pia Filler's Gandia Run as Szewczyk Also Falls

feature-midday-1101.jpg
Good afternoon from the Cueball Talk news desk. Judd Trump is out of the International Championship. Fan Zhengyi beat him 6–5 in Nanjing this morning, and the deciding frame was full of mistakes from both players. In Gandia the quarter-finals were just as unkind to the big names. Pia Filler, who won $100,000 in Doha last weekend, lost 9–5 to fellow German Ina Kaplan, and Wojciech Szewczyk went out to Spain's Iker Andoni Echeverria. All times below are GMT.

NANJING: TRUMP LOSES A NERVY DECIDER

Trump made a 63 and led 2–0. Fan, a former European Masters champion, then won four frames in a row with runs of 50, 53 and 73 to lead 4–2. Trump levelled at 4–4 with breaks of 72 and 66. Fan made 71 to go 5–4 up, and Trump forced the decider with an 81, the best break of the match. Both players missed good chances in a low-scoring last frame, and Trump paid for a fairly simple missed red. Fan took it 55–11.

Per Totally Snookered, it is Fan's first professional win over Trump in four meetings. Trump is a two-time winner of this event and has 31 ranking titles, but he has not reached a ranking final yet this season. This follows a first-match exit at the Northern Ireland Open a couple of weeks ago. Fan's last-32 opponent on Monday at 01:30 is the winner of Pang Junxu v Mina Awad.

Kyren Wilson, who won the Northern Ireland Open last weekend, nearly went out too. Liam Highfield led him 5–3 and was ahead in the ninth frame. Wilson made a 51 to take that frame on the final pink, then finished with 127 and 75 to win 6–5. Ding Junhui pulled away from Gao Yang to win 6–2, making a 132 along the way. He plays Zhang Anda next. Joe O'Connor made a 146 in the fifth frame against Yuan Sijun, the highest break of the event so far. Per Totally Snookered, it is only the 41st 146 in professional snooker. It didn't save him, though, because Yuan won 6–2.

  • Fan Zhengyi 6–5 Judd Trump
