David Causier defeated Peter Gilchrist 677-315 to successfully defend the 2025 Irish Open at the SBI Academy in Carlow, Ireland.

The victory marks the perfect start for Causier to a week that features both the Irish Open and the prestigious World Matchplay Championship which runs from 7-11 April.

The reigning world champion was in a field that featured 50 cueists from across the globe and he made the perfect start with a clean sweep of group stage victories over Jason Colebrook, Akhilesh Mohan, Antony Brown and Ketan Chawla.

An unfinished contribution of 323 then saw Causier comfortably move past India’s Siddharth Parikh to reach the quarter-finals where he overcame fellow countryman Martin Goodwill by a 738-188 scoreline.

Breaks of 270 and 220 helped the Englishman to an utterly dominant semi-final victory against India’s Brijesh Damani by a 819 point winning margin to set up a final meeting with Gilchrist.

The Singapore representative had been in fine form across the event and had reached the title match by defeating last year’s World Championship runner-up Robert Hall in the last four.

Causier once again showed his class, however, a top break of 279 in the final helped him to a 677-315 victory to regain the title in Carlow.
