India: 12-year-old Mittal lands Maharashtra triple crown
While Bali and Shenzhen have soaked up the TV bandwidth this week, the cleanest story of the day belongs to Mumbai.
Twelve-year-old Agastya Mittal (Otters Club), coached by former two-time Asian snooker champion Yasin Merchant, has become the youngest player to win a Triple Crown at the Maharashtra State Billiards & Snooker Championships at Khar Gymkhana. He took Sub-Junior Snooker, Sub-Junior Billiards and Junior Billiards in the same ranking event — the junior billiards gold coming against older opposition.
The snooker final was a clean 3–0 over Dev Jaisingh (Khar Gym): 66–63, 70–30, 53–33. Sub-junior billiards wins included 238–39, 243–97 and 215–88; junior billiards closed with 240–215, 232–212 and 230–194. Free Press Journal filed the feat on Wednesday evening London time — a proper English-billiards-and-snooker yarn UK readers may have missed while watching Shenzhen.
Also on the Indian slate: Agra’s Paras Gupta lifted the Raja Ramkumar Bhargava memorial UP State 15-red snooker title, recovering from 0–2 down to beat Lucknow’s Ayush Mittal 5–2 in Monday’s final (₹36,000 winner’s cheque) and book a National 15-red place in Bengaluru.
Bali Women’s Worlds: World No. 1 Pia Filler dumped; WQ sealed
Big evening move at the Kamui WPA Women’s 9-Ball World Championship ($200,000) in Nusa Dua — winners’ qualification is finished, and the shock of the session was Indonesia’s Annita Kanjaya overturning world No. 1 Pia Filler 2–1. Filler drops to the losers’ track; Kanjaya is into the last 16.
Also through on the winners’ side: defending champion Seo Seoa 2–1 Chia-Chia Chou; Kristina Tkach blanked Venus Lim 2–0; Savannah Easton blanked Yuki Hiraguchi 2–0; Chezka Centeno edged Kristina Zlateva 2–1; Tzu-Chien Wei beat Meng-Hsia Hung 2–1; plus earlier WQ wins for Chia Hua Chen (2–0 host Julia Permata Sari) and Chieh-Yu Chou (2–0 Zhu Qing Bi).
Loser Round 3 is also cleared — and it was brutal for the established names. Kelly Fisher fell 1–2 to Chihiro Kawahara; Han Yu was blanked 0–2 by Shui Ching Chiang; Fu Xiaofang went 1–2 to Huang Qing Ning; Soledad Ayala exited to Aleksandra Guleikova. Still breathing into losers’ qualification: Rubilen Amit (2–1 Miina Tani), Shi Tianqi (2–0 April Larson), Silviana Lu, Guleikova, Chiang, Huang, Xin-Yu Hong and Kawahara. Last 16 and losers’ qualification tables are now waiting.
Doubles Worlds: USA blank Spain; Poland, Syria, Chinese Taipei through
Winners’ qualification at the Isak Billiard WPA Men’s Doubles 10-Ball Worlds ($200,000) is done. USA blanked Spain 2–0; Poland blanked Germany 2–0; Syria edged Finland 2–1; Chinese Taipei beat the Netherlands 2–1. Those four sit in the quarter-final holding pattern.
Loser Round 3 likewise finished: Vietnam 2–1 Singapore, host Indonesia 2–1 China, Philippines blanked Albania 2–0, Great Britain blanked Norway 2–0 — all into losers’ qualification.
Men’s Open: WR1 still half-built
No fresh Winner Round 1 finishes since midday at the Aramith Men’s Open ($150,000). Sixteen WR1 ties remain waiting — including the likes of Filler, Gorst, Biado and Eklent Kaçi — with Loser Round 2 also fully queued. The half already in the book still stands: host Gebby through, Yapp/Shaw/Kaçi blanks, Aranas dumping Szewczyk to the losers’ side.
Shenzhen: Last 16 set — Wu, Walden, Slessor join the party
The Shenzhen Open last 32 wrapped Wednesday. Fresh since earlier files: world champion Wu Yize recovered from 0–2 to beat Xu Si 5–3 (centuries traded early); Ricky Walden edged English Open champion Ali Carter 5–4; Elliot Slessor dumped Welsh Open champion Barry Hawkins 5–2.
Mark Selby’s 5–1 over Jackson Page (centuries 132, 135, 138) pushed him to 980 career tons — twenty shy of the 1,000 club. Also already through: Murphy 5–1 Vafaei, Maguire 5–1 Grace, Wilson 5–2 Gilbert, Wakelin 5–0 Bingham, Holt 5–0 Un-Nooh, Si Jiahui 5–3 Gary Wilson, plus Trump, both Robertsons, Surety, Donaldson, Jimmy Robertson, Yuan Sijun.
Last-16 ties include Selby–Maguire, Murphy–Slessor, Walden–Wu Yize, Wakelin–Neil Robertson, Trump–Si Jiahui, Holt–Wilson, Donaldson–Jimmy Robertson, Yuan–Surety. Action resumes Thursday 1 October.
