Wuhan Open champion Xiao Guodong enjoyed a moment of perfection on day one of his title defence, crafting a 147 against former Women’s World Champion Mink Nutcharut.
The maximum break came in the fourth frame of a 5-0 victory for Xiao. It’s only the second 147 of the Chinese cueman’s career and the first he’s ever made at a final stages venue. Xiao now moves into pole position to scoop £5,000 for the high break this week.
There have now been 223 maximums in professional snooker history, with five having been made already this season.
Xiao said: “I feel very happy to be back at my lucky place. Last year I won my first ranking title here and now returning again feels so familiar—almost like it was only yesterday. To make a 147 here today, and my first ever maximum break in China, was really special. I was thrilled to achieve that during the match.
“So many fans came early, bought tickets, and cheered for me. Their support gave me a lot of encouragement. In the first two frames both of us made mistakes, then in the third and fourth I started to find rhythm with two centuries, including the 147. Honestly, I didn’t expect it.”
Perfect breaks are being made thick and fast on the World Snooker Tour currently. Ronnie O’Sullivan remarkably made two in the same match at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, while Thepchaiya Un-Nooh also composed a 147 earlier that week.
