Gary Wilson requires three more frames to defend the BetVictor Scottish Open title, leading Noppon Saengkham 6-2 after the opening session of the final in Edinburgh.

The Wallsend cueman captured his maiden ranking crown here 12 months ago with a 9-2 demolition of Leicester’s Joe O’Connor. He’s made a strong start in his attempt to repeat the feat this year. However, Wilson had looked to be set for the exit in the semi-finals, when he required three snookers in his decider with Zhou Yuelong before coming back to win 6-5 on a re-spotted black.

Thailand’s Saengkham is appearing in a ranking event final for the first time in his career. He scored a landmark 6-3 win over home hero John Higgins to make the final and is aiming to become the third Thai to taste ranking event glory after James Wattana and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.

Wilson charged out of the blocks this afternoon, breaks of 90, 62 and 66 saw him take the first three frames, before Saengkham reduced his arrears to make it 3-1. When play resumed, Wilson re-asserted his dominance with runs of 79, 105 and 78 to lead 6-1. However, Saengkham took the last on the black to end four behind at 6-2.

They return at 7pm to play the best of 17 encounter to a conclusion. The winner will take home the Stephen Hendry Trophy and £80,000.
